It's all
got to start somewhere and for us this was it. Originally it was
put together simply because First Avenue had a Thursday night to
kill and they wanted to fill space and do something with up and
coming swirl rock band Colfax Abbey. Around this same period of
time I had been working with them t for a show with legendary Can
Bass player Holger Czukay. And since I also was Colfax's A&R guy
they called me to put something together.

I had an
idea for an event like this for a long time, but it just never came
together any organic fashion. So I just let it sit until the right
opportunity presented itself. The pitch was simple, an ambient music
event (remember this was a time when ambient was not overused or
a catchall phrase that covered anything that wasn't danceable) that
featured DJ's on equal billing with bands, and that did it all without
pauses, breaks, patter. or general acknowledgment of the audience
of any kind. An environmental approach.

Sure it
sounds obvious now but at the time it raised more than a few eyebrows,
a DJ even that you couldn't dance too. bands not being able to stare
in dumbfounded silence between songs, good gawd! it anarchy ! The
original idea was lets try it see if it works, there was no grand
destiny to become a "sound system" (that happened with number two
once we knew people other than us actually liked this sort of music)
really we just wanted to hear the music we all listened to at home
in a big environment.
